Feralis Project

A space for radical transformation that integrates refuge, ecological restoration and education

What is the Feralis Project?

It is not a sanctuary, but a space for radical transformation that integrates animal refuge, ecological restoration and education. A place where:

  • Human and non-human animals live with dignity in restored environments,
  • New forms of coexistence are researched,
  • And practical training is offered for caregivers and rescuers.

Feralis was born from a certainty: we need places that embody, here and now, another way of inhabiting the world. Where animals are not "resources", but beings with language, bonds and rights. Where restoring the land also means healing our relationships.

In a world that insists on separating us, Feralis wants to be tangible proof that another sensitivity is possible. And although the path is long, each workshop, each article, each book and each conversation are seeds of that change.

A Restoration Model

The Project is a comprehensive initiative that combines the rescue and care of horses and other dependent animals with the ecological regeneration of degraded territories, and the ethical and technical training of people committed to animal welfare.

Rescue & Care

Providing refuge for horses and dependent animals with species-appropriate habitats and respectful care practices.

Ecological Regeneration

Restoring degraded lands through regenerative forestry, soil recovery and native planting practices.

Education & Training

Offering ethical and technical training for animal welfare advocates, rescuers and sanctuary workers.

Feralis addresses three interconnected crises:

  • Ecological: Restoring ecosystems through regenerative forestry, soil recovery and native planting.
  • Educational: Offering free and accessible training for sanctuary workers, emphasizing respect and observation.
  • Animal Welfare: Providing refuge for exploited/abandoned animals in a conscious and organized manner.

Feralis is conceived as a living space, where animals and people can heal, learn, share and transform the way we relate to non-human life and the earth itself. It is not only a physical sanctuary, but also an educational, ecological and cultural project, destined to sow a new form of coexistence and shared responsibility.

At the heart of this dream is the "Horses and Dependent Animals Studies" project, which will offer in-person and online courses for caregivers, shelter workers, researchers and people interested in the human-animal bond from an ethics of respect and restoration.

Feralis is more than a place. It is a replicable model of coexistence, restoration and education. A space of deep care in which every being - animal, plant, person - has the opportunity to inhabit with dignity, in an environment that prioritizes life, relationship and healing.

Project Stages

1

Research and Planning

  • Development of the comprehensive plan for the sanctuary, ecological restoration and training school.
  • Design of facilities, regeneration strategies and training curriculum.
  • Call for researchers and experts in animal welfare and ecological restoration to collaborate.
  • Evaluation and definition of criteria for land acquisition or rental, considering environmental, logistical and community aspects.
2

Land Acquisition

  • Search and selection of land that meets the criteria defined in the planning stage.
  • Purchase or long-term lease of suitable land for the sanctuary and restoration activities.
  • Final environmental assessment to ensure project viability and sustainability.
3

Creation of the "Sanctuary" and Ecological Restoration

  • Construction of facilities: shelters, stables and grazing spaces needed for the animals.
  • Start of ecological restoration: planting native species, soil recovery and regenerative practices.
  • Reception of the first horses and other dependent animals to the sanctuary.
  • Ecological role of horses in regeneration: Inspired by the success of the reintroduction of Przewalski's horse in China, the horses of the Feralis Project will be active agents in the restoration of the territory through rotational grazing, seed dispersal, natural fertilization and trail opening, strengthening biodiversity and ecosystem health.
  • Development and launch of the training school, with online modules and in-person workshops.
4

International Collaboration, Official and Monitoring

  • Establishment of international collaboration networks with projects, universities and sanctuaries.
  • Search for official and governmental alliances for public policies, funding and institutional support.
  • Constant monitoring of ecological impact and animal welfare to improve practices.
  • Expansion of the school with global collaborations, courses and workshops with international experts.
  • Innovation based on research and practice to ensure project sustainability.
  • Community integration with active participation of volunteers and local inhabitants to strengthen human, animal and territory bonds.
5

Expansion and Consolidation

  • Expansion of the sanctuary to host more rescued animals, using previous experiences.
  • Strengthening and expansion of the school with new in-person and virtual courses to reach more regions.
  • Continuous adaptation of practices and structures according to monitoring results and accumulated learning.

Vision of the Feralis Project

Vision

Create a global model of respectful and sustainable coexistence between humans and dependent animals, in which horses and other animals can live with dignity, freedom and well-being, actively integrating into the regeneration of the ecosystems they inhabit.

Objectives

  • Guarantee the comprehensive well-being of horses and other dependent animals, offering them a safe territory adequate to their physical and emotional needs.
  • Restore and regenerate degraded ecosystems through regenerative forestry practices and the ecological management of animals as active agents of the landscape.
  • Train and educate people in the respectful and responsible care of dependent animals, through a free school with online and in-person programs.
  • Promote scientific research on ecological impact and animal welfare, promoting innovation in management and restoration practices.
  • Build national and international collaboration networks that enhance the reach and sustainability of the project.
  • Promote awareness and education about the importance of ethical and ecological coexistence between humans and non-human animals.

Why is this project urgent?

In a global context marked by the climate crisis and the urgent need to transform our relationship with the planet, the Feralis Project presents itself as a concrete and necessary alternative. By promoting ecological restoration through regenerative practices and the respectful integration of animals into their ecosystems, we seek to provide a model that contributes to slowing environmental deterioration and fostering a paradigm shift towards harmonious coexistence with nature. This project not only responds to a local need, but is part of a global network of initiatives working to ensure a sustainable future for all forms of life.

Animal welfare

The sanctuary will provide adequate space for horses and other dependent animals that have been victims of exploitation, providing them with an environment free of abuse and dignified.

Ecological restoration

Through regenerative forestry and sustainable practices, lands damaged by human intervention will be restored, contributing to biodiversity and environmental health.

Education and awareness

The free school will train people from all over the world to provide respectful and scientific care to animals in shelters and sanctuaries.
